Don’t Look Down

“Haughtiness brought about by one’s service of HaShem with a pure heart may cause that one will look down upon someone who does not serve HaShem with pure thoughts and who fulfills all that is written in Hashem’s Torah without attachment to HaShem (‘devekuth’). All the more so when one sees someone involved in the study of HaShem’s Torah, and one thinks that the person does so insincerely, that person will become disdained in one’s eyes. But [to look upon others this way] is a severe iniquity — may the Merciful One save us from this.”

Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, NEFESH HACHAYIM, “Chapters,” Ch. 2
