Humility as Sacrifice

“Our Sages of blessed memory have said: ‘How great are those who are lowly in spirit, for when the Holy Temple stood, a person would sacrifice a burnt-offering and would earn the merit of a burnt-offering. For a meal-offering they would earn the merit of a meal-offering. Yet one of humble spirit is considered by Scripture as having sacrificed all of the offerings, as it says: ‘The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit’ (Psalms 51:19)’ (Sotah 5B).”
